'House in Hampstead: The front facade is dominated
by a double-height window sympathetic in scale to the porch of the
adjoining Victorian villa and indicative of the interior. The lower
half of the window is banded to create a base at the same level as
the villa. The asymmetrical column and canted window set up a progression
towards the front door. The hierarchy of interior spaces is established
by a dominant central volume. Its aspirations to perfection are manifest
in the four-way symmetry of the central lantern. At ground level,
a degree of enclosure is provided by a curved screen behind the fireplace,
partially concealing the staircase. Peripheral to this are more differential
spaces for dining, sleeping and study. The window to the garden is
pulled away from the rear facade to create a mediating space between
interior and garden.'
